An example of using the forest as stimuli for creative writing

When I began this journey, my understanding of what Forest Sessions would represent was limited and flawed. Certainly, after attending training with Lily Horseman, my knowledge and understanding has greatly improved and with it a greater respect and awareness of the Forest School ethos and pedagogy. Forest School training has presented me with far more choices than I could ever have imagined – rather than a limited and narrow scoped path. Coupled with my previous knowledge, experiences and training, my future pathway (or even pathways) has the potential to become something extraordinary. I am fortunate to be part of a movement and culture where creativity knows no bounds and where the curious mind finds solace. It is a place where the pursuit of knowledge, the embrace of change, and the willingness to take risks are not mere options but essential ingredients for learning. These are the benefits that Forest School training has brought me and using the pedagogy that I have acquired, I can bring that whole experience to the children that I encounter on this continuing journey.

The journey has been exhilarating and the second week of training really opened my eyes to the limitless possibilities of Forest School. I have a background in writing and I can use the wealth of experience that I have in storytelling and creativity to offer unique experiences in the woodlands and nature in general. Where previously I saw limitations due to the fact that I am not woodland based, I now understand (especially after delivering my sessions), that I can create the Forest School in different settings. It may not be ideal but it is possible. I can create an urban experience that weaves in the colourful tapestries of my own life, culture and knowledge. The second week of training was a wonderful encounter with a group who clearly brought their new-found confidence and individuality back to the table and it was then that I saw how I could make my own unique mark on the Forest School Canvas.

I am now looking forward to delving into PhD study in 2025, where I research the links between Forest School and Creative Writing. I have accepted a place at the University of Salford and I aim to contribute to the academic investigation and analysis that Forest School learning brings. My own practice has demonstrated that there are hugely positive benefits to be gained from adopting the Forest School ethos in education and connecting children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with nature. I want to share that hypothesis widely with other professionals. There are no limits, unless I seek to impose them myself.

My Story

This is every bit my story as it is a portfolio of my Forest School Learning. Throughout this journey, there was a beginning – where my doubts and fears overshadowed the capabilities that I had; the middle – where I recognised that there been a metamorphosis and the change was in my own recognition of my strengths; there is no end – this journey continues. To begin with, fire was my nemesis (I could break out in a cold sweat at the fear of failing to light one). Fire is now my super power.

I loved the outdoors but I never embraced it fully. I didn’t acknowledge that this was a space in which I actually belonged. I’ve claimed it as my own and I want others, like me, to claim it too.
